The organization specializes in training customized Assistance Dogs for two general populations: children and adolescents with physical, neurological, psychiatric or emotional disabilities; and Veterans and active-duty Service Members with Chronic/Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).

Care Credit is a health care credit plan that offers convenient financing which is accepted at many types of health care offices. Oral cancer is becoming more common, and as your dental provider we are aware of this. At each dental cleaning appointment and every new patient exam an oral cancer screening is performed. It's is painless and most the time you don't know this is being performed. We will thoroughly look at all the tissues inside your mouth, including under your tongue and areas on your neck. Some oral cancer signs to be aware of in your mouth are: 1.a red, white, or discolored patch or lump in or around your mouth 2. a sore that bleeds easily or that doesn't heal within 2 weeks 3. an area that has thickened, raised, or become hardened 4. a rough patch of tissue 5. difficultly swallowing 6. a chronic sore throat or hoarseness. The Carousel Center is a non-profit organization committed to assisting victims of child abuse, providing critical care services to children from 15 counties throughout southeastern North Carolina. Referrals are made through law enforcement, social services and physicians. Last fiscal year (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011), the center provided services to 271 children ages newborn -17 with allegations of sexual & physical abuse. Holiday Treats vs. Good Nutrition

We love this time of year and all the yummy foods that come with it. Whether we are receiving goodies from friends or going to parties there is constanly a choice of what to eat. Good nutition plays an important role in our overall health, but affects our dental health as well. Eating right is a daily habit, just like brushing and flossing. Eating a balanced diet will help boost your immune system and give you the nutrients you need. What you eat and how often you eat play an important role in your dental health. Every time you eat startchy or sweet foods the bacteria in your mouth feast upon it and produce acids that attack your teeth. The more often you eat these type of foods the greater chance of getting cavities. Limit the amount beverages that contain sugar in your diet. This is not to say you can't have soda, sweets, or goodies, especially this time of year. But if your going to partake of these the best time is during a meal or right after. While eating your saliva becomes more acidic to break down the food, and starts the process of neutralizing 20 min after. If your constantly snacking or sipping on soda your saliva stays acidic, eventullay causing decay. So enjoy this time of year and the goodies, but keep this in mind. And stay away from sticky and crunchy foods that can comprimise dental work in your mouth. Happy eating!

Casey's half marathon

So Casey has been a runner for about 4 years, she found herself needing a hobby when Eric deployed to Iraq for 15 months back in 2007! Hitting the pavement at first was a bit grueling but she very quickly began to enjoy it and even looked forward to her standard treadmill at the gym (4th in from the left!) Just recently Casey decided to sign up for the Raleigh City of Oaks Half Marathon to "stretch her legs". This marathon was held on November 6, 2011 and was a standard 13.1 miles. Casey ended up finishing with a time of 2:06:09 and stated that it was a good introduction into the future marathons she plans on participating in. Eric is now training as well, we'll see if he can keep up ;)

The end of October is fast approaching, and with that brings Halloween. This is a great time to remind everyone to be conscious of how many sweets you and your kids eat. As everyone knows, eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay. A few things to keep in mind may be helpful. Any type of suckers or hard candies should be avoided. Constant sugar on the teeth can be more harmful than a chocolate bar or candy bar. Also sticky candies such as Milk Duds and Dots should be avoided. These candies can pull out fillings and crowns and stick to the teeth for longer periods of time. Halloween is a fun time of year, and eating candy is unavoidable sometimes. But being more conscious of the kinds we eat will aid in keeping our teeth healthy and smiles beautiful. We hope you enjoy trick-or-treating, going to parties, and dressing up.

The Study Club provides a great opportunity for the Dr. and staff to gain increased knowledge in topics such as Implant Dentistry, Treatment Planning, and Case Presentation to better serve our patients. The Study Club was established by Dr. Phyllis Cook (Periodontist) as many restorative dentists and specialists expressed a desire for a study club which involved comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment planning rather than one particular discipline (implants, occlusion, etc). Total Case Management is the focus of the group, and the goal is to elevate the level of dentistry for every practitioner involved. Sensitive Teeth?

Do you have sensitive teeth?

Sensitivity can be a pain to deal with for some people when exposed to cold air, hot/cold food or drinks, or even sweets!
There are many reasons why you might have sensitive teeth. Examples include, grinding your teeth; recession of the gums; acidic and sugary foods. When teeth lose its outer layer of enamel it exposes dentin which is the middle layer of the tooth. The middle layer of your tooth dentin has many tiny tubes that extend from the root of the tooth to the outside layer of the tooth. Did you know? Brushing your teeth too hard may also strip away the outside layer of your teeth exposing dentin. Toothpaste that is also too abrasive may strip the outside layer of your teeth when brushing.
You may ask your dentist on ways that could possibly help with sensitivity. Your dentist may inform you to use desensitizing oral care products.

Hurricane Irene

Our thoughts certainly go out to those who were affected by Hurricane Irene but we are relieved Wilmington was spared the worst part of the storm. Casey and I stayed in town so we could check on the office after Irene passed. Fortunately we did not have any damage but did lose power at home for nearly twenty hours. Being from New Orleans we have learned a few tricks to prepare for storms wich came in handy this week. We always freeze a case of water in plastic bottles a couple of days prior to bad weather. Zip lock containers or empty 2-liter bottles will do as well. If the power goes out, the ice will keep things cold enough not to spoil and the containers will not allow the water to make a mess. Move a few to the refrigerator side and don't forget to empty the ice bin into an ice chest. If the ice melts in the bin, it will refreeze when power resumes and can jam the automatic ice dispeser. Limit the number of times you go into the fridge and your food will stay cold. It worked very well for us in Irene. Even the milk survived. EB

Veneers

A common procedure seen and talked about in the media these past few years are Veneers. So what are veneers? They are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They are a great choice to improve the appearance of teeth that are stained, crooked, have gaps, or worn down. They can also give you straighter, whiter, and more even looking teeth. The porcelain used is translucent and looks very natural. Placing veneers usually takes two appointments. The first appointment we remove a small amount of tooth structure that is equal to the thickness of porcelain needed, take impressions, and place temporary veneers. The impressions are sent to a lab and takes approximately 3 weeks to process. The next visit we remove the temporaries and placed the permanent veneers, check the fit and shade, and if all looks perfect bond to teeth permanently. Veneers are a great way to transform your smile and will last many years. Feel free to ask about veneers if you would like to change something about your smile and see if this is a good option for you.

Failing Amalgam Fillings

Most people think amalgam (silver) fillings last forever. Unfortunately, this is not the case. While we still consider amalgam a good restorative material, several factors can lead to causing your old amalgam fillings to fail. Normal chewing forces can cause amalgam fillings to become worn around the edges which can cause bacteria to seep between the filling and the tooth and infect the inner layers of the tooth. The moisture and temperature changes in the mouth can cause the amalgam fillings to swell which could cause fractures or breaks in the natural tooth structure. When we suspect an old amalgam filling is failing we may recommend replacing the filling, but if the old filling is large, a crown or other form of treatment may be recommended. ALS Raffle Winner Announced

There are so many ways to donate to your local Walk to Defeat ALS and Dr. Eric and Casey Burns in Wilmington provided the Catfish Chapter with a generous gift of $2500 in dental services to benefit the Wilmington Walk to Defeat ALS.
For every $250 a Walk participant raised, their name was entered into a drawing. Jessica Patterson of Phil’s Dairy Devils team was the proud recipient.
We cannot pull off the Walks without the amazing support from our corporate community and the Burns’ dental office speaks loudly that not only do they support the Wilmington community, that they support the fine folks supporting the ALS Association Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter.

Do You know what Tori is?

Tori or Torus:
Tori/Torus can be on the Maxillary or Mandibular part of your mouth.
It is non-pathological outgrowth of bone.

How does this effect you?
Large Tori can infringe on tongue space, impacting on breathing or airway space.
It could make it difficult to make fabricate an upper or lower denture or partial! X-rays taken in the oral cavity can also be painful as the Tori doesn't provide enough space in the mouth.
Some people are unaware that they have Tori. You can look in the mirror and/or ask your Dentist about Tori. Torus/Tori is generally not harmful but it's good to know what's going on in your mouth! If your interested in knowing what Tori looks like Google some pictures online.

Women in Businss (WIB) Speaker Series

The Women in Business (WIB) Speaker Series will host its third luncheon on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Press 102 in Wilmington, North Carolina from 11:30am 1:00pm. The first series of its kind in Wilmington, the WIB Speaker Series are monthly luncheons for approximately 100 women business leaders from the Wilmington community. Each month, a different guest speaker, known as an expert in her field, will lecture or lead a workshop on a topic related to women's issues, especially pertaining to business, wellness and personal growth. A mix of business owners, presidents and CEO's, in addition to healthcare, customer service, financial professionals and more will be in attendance. Drs. Burns wished to support this local business organization and graciously provided a donation to the gift bags presented to the women in attendance. Love being a part of the Burns' team!

I am the newest team member to Dr. Eric and Casey Burns' practice. I came from a practice in Charlotte as a Dental Assistant about two months ago and I'm loving Wilmington. I have been a Dental Assistant for 12 yrs and still love dentistry and learning new skills and technology. I have thoroughly enjoyed my position as a Treatment Coordinator (Dental Assistant) at this office and find both Dr. Casey and Eric Burns to be sincerely caring not only for the patients we see but our staff. They are excellent dentists and keep up to date on all the newest in dentistry. My favorite part of dentistry is cosmetic dentistry. To be a part of changing how someone feels about their smile is so rewarding. I love to see results when someone whitens their teeth. I also love to assist with veneers and porcelain crowns on the front teeth. I am a big advocate of implants to replace missing teeth as well as to stabilize a denture. I hope to meet many of you as patients at this practice and if you have any questions about cosmetic dentistry I would love to answer them.

A gala for W.A.R.M. (Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry) will be taking place at the Landfall Country Club in the near future and one of our patients is a silent auction coordinator for this event. It's that time of year again! Summer is fast approaching and that means more time out in the sun. Before you head out for all the fun that summer has to offer, don't forget the sunscreen. "Most decayed teeth can be saved! " A filling or a crown may by considered with decayed teeth. A filling either silver or white may be used depending on the size. Regular check ups are important. We recommend a check up every six months so we can identify and prevent oral health problems. A regular exam can include: reviewing your concerns, your dental chart, and your medical history. This check up can also include cleaning your teeth. This enables us to see clearly the condition of your teeth and gums. A careful visual exam will be done as we check for decay on the biting surfaces of the teeth as well as for signs of wear or cracks. In addition we will check the color and contours of gums while also diagnosing any sores or lesions in the soft tissues of your mouth, screening them for oral cancer. Are your teeth sensitive? Sensitive teeth occur for different reasons. One of the main causes is when the gum tissue recedes and the root surface becomes exposed. The covering over the root surface is called cementum and is thinner and more porous than the enamel that covers the crown of each tooth. Each root has thousands of tiny tubules that lead to the nerve of the tooth, the pulp, and when exposed, can allow stimuli (hot, cold, sweets) to reach the nerve resulting in the sensitivity that you feel.
Some of the causes of recession and other factors that lead to sensitive teeth include:
- Brushing too hard or using toothbrushes that do not have soft bristles
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Cracked teeth
- Grinding and clenching of your teeth often brought on by stress
- Some tooth whitening products
- Plaque build-up
- Abrasive, strong mouthwashes

What to do when your child knocks out a tooth

With many children playing sports these days, tooth injuries are very common. It is a great idea to invest in a mouth guard to protect the teeth, however if a tooth is knocked out, there are a few important things you should know: If it is a baby tooth, just leave it out. If it is a permanent tooth, you need to act quickly and follow these instructions carefully in order to save the tooth. First, find the tooth, but do not scrub it clean. Next, it needs to be put in a moist environment. The best place is back in the mouth, preferably back in the tooth's socket, but if you are uncomfortable doing so, a glass of milk or a solution specifically designed for such accidents such as "Save-A-Tooth Emergency Tooth Preserving System" will also do the trick. ("Save-A-Tooth" should be kept in all team first aid kits and is available online). Be sure to call the dentist right away. It is best to get the tooth back in as soon as possible. The tooth will probably need to be splinted back in place and may eventually need a root canal. The faster you act and seek treatment once a tooth is knocked out, the higher the chances are that the tooth can be saved.

CPR made Simple

CPR is one of the greatest skills one can acquire; and now it is even simpler. According to the American Heart Association, one can now perform CPR without having to use mouth-to-mouth rescusitation, known as "hands-only" CPR. The heart association guidelines are as follows: call 911, then push hard and fast (about 100 times per minute) on the person's breastbone until Paramedics arrive. According to the Harvard Health Letter, studies indicate that people who received only chest compressions prior to Paramedics arriving were just as likely to survive as those who received both compressions and breaths.

Please keep in mind that there are certain circumstances when traditional CPR is still more beneficial, such as drug overdoses, asthma attacks as well as near drownings. With 30% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital receiving "bystander" CPR, we can all strive to have a better understanding of what to do when emergency situations like these arise.

Preventing the Flu

Bad Habits Lead to Dental Problems

If you have a habit of chewing ice, eating lemons, drinking soft drinks, biting fingernails, or using your teeth as tools, you could be doing serious damage to your teeth and not even know it. Chewing ice can cause microfractures in the enamel of the teeth which over time can harbor bacteria and eventually cause staining, decay, or much worse, larger fractures that can result in the need for root canal therapy, crowns, or even loss of teeth. Sucking on lemons is another habit that can damage teeth. Because lemons are so acidic, their juice changes the pH levels in the mouth causing the enamel to demineralize, which can lead to tooth sensitivity. Soft drinks are also highly acidic and loaded with sugar, so sipping on them on a regular basis can cause catastrophic dental damage. Biting fingernails not only introduces all kinds of bacteria into the mouth but can also cause chipping of the enamel. Using your teeth as tools to open things or biting on pens can also have this same effect. Laser technology has greatly improved since its induction in 1976. A soft tissue laser uses energized light to precisely remove soft tissue. The light beam simultaneously sculpts and cauterizes the area so there is little to no bleeding, increased healing time and because the laser sterilizes the tissue, the chance of infection is greatly reduced.

Lasers can be used to lengthen a crown, sterilize infected areas, remove gum tissue without cutting and remove cold sores or lesions. The FDA indicates lasers are safe to use on everyone.

With approximately 30,000 new cases of oral pharyngeal cancer diagnosed each year in the United States, oral cancer is an imporant public health issue. This type of cancer is unique in that the dental profession can play a major role in its management. It is estimated that between 65% and 75% of patients with oral cancer will initially present to the dentist. Dentists are involved in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and prevention of oral cancer. In addition, dental specialists are actively researching the molecular biology of oral cancer and lobbying for more government-funded tobacco control and other preventative programs.

So remember, ninety percent of patients in whom oral cancer develops are smokers. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between alcohol and tobacco products is well documented, and further predisposes people to oral cancer.

The challenge was created to benefit The ALS Association – Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter’s Wilmington Walk to Defeat ALS™, which was held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the UNCW campus. Each $500 raised by a Walk participant earned them an automatic entry into J. Carter Ward, D. D. S.’s “Walk With the Doc” challenge and the chance to win free dental services. Mrs. Talbert raised over $3600 for her team, Team Talbert, honoring her mother from Florida who is currently battling ALS.

The Walk raised over $74,000 for patients and families affected by ALS (more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), a progressive and fatal motor neuron disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

“I’m just doing this for ALS,” Cindy Talbert noted. “I’ve never won anything in my life. It’s put a smile on my face!”

With the “Walk With the Doc” challenge, J. Carter Ward, D. D. S. remembered Jack Ward, Dr. Carter’s father who passed away from ALS.

In addition to the challenge, J. Carter Ward., D. D. S. participated as a corporate Walk team, “Ward’s Warriors.” In their first year participating, the team raised over $200 as well as participating as a monetary sponsor. The Wilmington Walk to Defeat ALS™ is an annual event which raises money to help find a cure for ALS and provide assistance and grants to patients with ALS.

What Is Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)? What Causes Teeth Grinding?

Bruxism is the term that refers to an incessant and unintentional grinding and clenching of the teeth. Persons with bruxism are called bruxers. They are often unaware that they have developed this habit.

Bruxism may be mild and may not even require treatment. However, it can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged Bruxism during sleep that causes the majority of health issues and can even occur during short naps. It is one of the most common sleep disorders. People who have sleep bruxism may be unaware of it until complications develop. For this reason, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of teeth grinding and to seek regular dental care.

What are the signs and symptoms teeth grinding (bruxism)?

-a popping or clicking in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
-abraded teeth
-chronic facial pain
-damage to the tooth enamel, exposing the inside of the tooth (dentin)
-damage, chewed tissue to the inside of the cheek
-depression
-dislocation of the jaw

This means we now have one camera per operatory making it easy for us to allow you to see what is going on inside your mouth. The intraoral handpiece is approximately the size and shape of a dental mirror and has a built-in light source. Wilmington ALS Walk 2010 Recap

Hundreds of people walked UNCW's campus in to support friends and loved ones struggling with ALS and Dr. Ward and staff (also known as Ward's Walkers) were out in full force to support the cause.

Lou Gehrig's Disease, as it's more commonly known, attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Walkers held up signs and wore clothing with the names of loved ones. Some walked in teams, others alone, but everyone was happy for the support in the fight against ALS.

Each year more than 100,000 people across the country participate in the event. This year the Wilmington walk raised more than $35,000 for use in research to find a cure.

The Importance of Sunscreen

With summer fast approaching, we would like to remind our patients of the importance of sunscreen. According to the FDA, skin cancer kills more than 10.000 people a year. By applying sunscreen 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapplying often, especially after sweating and swimming, we can greatly reduce our risks.
One particular body part that people neglect to apply sunscreen is the lips. The skin on the lips is much thinner than that of other body parts and therefore more susceptible to premature aging and cancer. Many lip balms now come with sunscreen in them.

We perform a thorough oral cancer exam during your checkups because early detection can save your life.

Oral cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the mouth and throat. Some of the warning signs are:
A red white,or discolored patch or lump in or around your mouth.
A sore that bleeds easily or that does not heal within 2 weeks.
An area that has thickened, raised, or become hardened.
A rough patch of tissue.
Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
A chronic sore throat or hoarseness.

During the exam, we feel for lumps of abnormal tissue changes on your neck and inside your mouth.

We thoroughly examine the soft tissues in your mouth, especially the most frequent oral cancer sites, which include: your tongue, the floor of your mouth, the soft palate, lips, and gums.

Randall Parkway Expansion/Beautification

For years, the NCDOT (Department of Transportation)has been planning to expand and improve the traffic flow of Randall Parkway. As a result of the expansion, our street will be under construction throughout the summer and through much of 2011. Furthermore, the NCDOT has acquired part of our parking lot as a "zoned easment" during the construction process. To ensure that our patients have adequate parking, we have obtained parking spaces at 4918 Randall Parkway. This property's parking lot is directly adjacent to our practice. It will be clearly marked. Starting in July, our patients should feel free to park there if our lot is full.

I’d like to inform every denture patient to carefully read the instructions on denture adhesives properly and to avoid over use and swallowing the material. Denture adhesives also contain Zinc, which may cause serious problems if used more than the recommended amount. How to Brush - Teeth Brushing Techniques

What Is the Right Way to Brush?
Proper brushing takes at least two minutes — that's right, 120 seconds! Most adults do not come close to brushing that long. To get a feel for the time involved, try using a stopwatch. To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline, hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section as follows:

Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth
Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth
Clean the chewing surfaces
For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too

Tilt the brush at a 45° angle against the gumline and sweep or roll the brush away from the gumline.

Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes.
Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath

What Type of Toothbrush Should I Use?
Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard-to-reach back teeth. For many, a powered toothbrush is a good alternative. It can do a better job of cleaning teeth, particularly for those who have difficulty brushing or who have limited manual dexterity.

How Important is the Toothpaste I Use?
It is important that you use a toothpaste that's right for you. Today there is a wide variety of toothpaste designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist which toothpaste is right for you.

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?
You should replace your toothbrush when it begins to show wear, or every three months, whichever comes first. It is also very important to change toothbrushes after you've had a cold, since the bristles can collect germs that can lead to reinfection.

At What Age Should I Start Bringing My Child for Dental Check-ups?

Many new parents ask us at what age they should bring their children in for their first dental checkup. Most general dentists start seeing children around age 3, however, let it be noted that if your child still hasn't sprouted his first tooth by 16 months, or if you notice tooth decay, it may be a good idea to bring him in sooner.
A good way to get your child used to the dental experience is to bring him in to watch a parent or sibling have their teeth cleaned. By doing so, the child gets accustomed to the staff in the office and the routine that he will be exposed to. Keep in mind that parents and siblings should be positive about the experience and never use any negative words regardless of their own dental fears.
You can prepare your child for his first visit by letting him know that we are going to count his teeth and brush them with our special toothbrush. We like to keep the first visit short and sweet and an overall positive experience so our little ones will be encouraged to take care of their teeth and happy to come back to see us each time.

We would like to congratulate one of our hygienists, Heather, for her pregnancy. She will be welcoming a new baby into her life in Feb. of this year. We are all very excited for her! She has decided that she will be a stay-at-home mommy for her 2 children so she will no longer be with us here at Dr. Ward's office. Also, we have lost another valued employee in Sallie. She has gotten married and moved away to California. Congratulations to them both! They will certainly be missed by all.

The Evolution of Caries "Cavity" Detection

Diagnodent...Our office is proud to offer the most advanced cavity detection equipment used in the dental field. Diagnodent is a laser technology that scans your tooth with harmless pulses of light. When a cavity is present, fluorescent light of a different wavelength bounces back to the sensor, which is translated to a digital read-out. Water is such a vital necessity. It helps your body filter the impurites that we encounter daily. But did you know that it can help your teeth? Were you aware that a large portion of the population suffers from an often undetected dental problem?

"Xerostomia" is the medical term for the lack of saliva. Xerostomia is sometimes called pasties, cottonmouth,or doughmouth. It causes difficulty in speech and eating. Since there is decreased saliva, patients complain of bad breath, as well as, a dramatic increase in the number of cavities.

The causes of dry mouth may be dehydration,uncontroled Diabetes, anxiety, consumption of alcoholic beverages, trauma of the salivary ducts, mouth breathing, radiation therapy,aging and certain medications. Such medications include: antihistamines, antidepressants, and amphetmines (including medications that are taken for ADHD).

Treatment of Xerostomia includes: drinking lots of water, chewing xylitol-containing gum,using a dry mouth mouthwash and paying careful attention to their overall oral health.
